The North Shore Shuttle is currently operating!

*Residents with Hawaii Driver License or state ID may ride the shuttle free, on a space available basis after reserved riders are seated. Residents who choose to pay for a shuttle reservation are guaranteed a seat.

In 2022 we transported well over 140,000 people on shuttles in and out of the Haena State Park (HSP). This reduced vehicle traffic by over 50 thousand cars.

We were then able to re-invest funds generated by the successful shuttle system back into the community through over 30 full time jobs with 401k benefits.

We also launched a mini grant program where we contributed to:

  • Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala’s participation in the 2022 Merrie Monarch

  • Kilohana Hoe Wa'a Canoe Club attend the 2022 IVF Va'a World Sprint Elite and Club Championships,

  • Hanalei Canoe Club (HCC) Hanalei to Haena 8 mile race

  • HCC Napali Challenge

  • Namolokama Canoe Club Hanalei Bay Swim Challenge

  • Waioli Taro Farmers

Positive Impacts from 2022

  • Began with 264 riders per day, now over 400.

  • Reduced vehicles traveling from Waipā to Hā‘ena, initially 100 cars daily, now almost 200 per day (well over 50,000 cars annually).

  • Onboard audio recording provides cultural information to riders.

  • Waipā signage and storyboards also educate riders pre-visit.

  • Free shuttle service for residents between Hā‘ena and Hanalei.

  • Access System employs over 30 north shore residents.

  • HI is developing a new “road conditions / etiquette” website to
support the community’s efforts to manage visitor impacts.

Through our partnership with the county and state, and the hard work of the community, we have transported over 200,000 humans and removed over 90,000 vehicles from our roads since we launched in 2019.

While the management of thousands of people weekly in and out of the park is a huge effort, we are also grateful to facilitate the improvement of signage in and around Haena State Park and the Hui Makaʻainana o Makana. This is real money re-invested in our community.

“It has always been the desire of Hui Maka’āinana o Makana and our community to protect Hā‘ena for generations to come. This is our ancestral home, and it is our kuleana to care for this sacred place."
- Presley Wann, President of Hui Maka‘āinana O Makana

Have You Seen Our New Signage?

Meet a few of our North Shore Shuttle staff members!

Jolly-Ann

You'll likely see Jolly-Ann down at Waipa greeting guests and helping them get on the Ha'ena Shuttle. She wants to make sure everyone who comes to Waipa to get on the shuttle is prepared and willing to adjust their plans based off of the conditions down at Ke'e. "Following directions can save lives!"

Sherman

Uncle Sherman was born and raised in Ha'ena. He loves being able to work at the place he frequented as a child and greet people as they get off the shuttle at Ke'e. He is pictured with Keris who comes all the way from O'ahu to work at The Hanalei Initiative as one of our GoHaena Shuttle drivers.
